Al Ahli edges Al Nassr on penalties to win Saudi Super Cup

Hong Kong, Aug 23 (UNI) Cristiano Ronaldo’s 100th goal for Al Nassr was not enough as Al Ahli lifted the Saudi Super Cup with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory following a 2-2 draw at Hong Kong Stadium on Saturday.

The match was cagey until the 38th minute, when Al Nassr won a penalty after the ball struck defender Ali Majrashi’s arm. Ronaldo converted emphatically past Edouard Mendy, becoming the first player to score 100 or more goals for four clubs as well as his national team.

Al Ahli thought they had equalized before halftime when Ivan Toney headed in from a Galeno cross, but the goal was disallowed for offside. Moments later, Franck Kessie curled home in stoppage time to level the score.

Marcelo Brozovic restored Al Nassr’s lead early in the second half, only for Roger Ibanez’s late header to force penalties.

In the shootout, Al Ahli were flawless, with Toney, Kessie, Riyad Mahrez, Feras Albrikan and Galeno all converting. Ronaldo, Brozovic, and Joao Felix scored for Al Nassr, but Mendy’s save from Abdullah Al-Khaibari proved decisive.
