Bhopal, Under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, the institute has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing a rare and complex surgery to treat a 27-year-old patient diagnosed with Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Artery Hypertension. This procedure highlights AIIMS Bhopal’s role as the only state-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh capable of handling such complex cases.
The patient initially admitted with sudden shortness of breath and a persistent cough at a local hospital. Despite symptomatic management, his condition did not improve, prompting his referral to AIIMS Bhopal. The diagnosis revealed Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Artery Hypertension (CTEPH). CTEPH is a rare and serious condition in which blood clots that have formed in the lungs over time cause high blood pressure in the lungs. This leads to strain on the heart, affecting its ability to pump blood efficiently. If not treated, CTEPH can result in severe complications, including heart failure.
Prof. Singh emphasized the importance of this achievement, saying: “This successful surgery is a testament to our team’s dedication and expertise in advanced cardiac care.” During the surgery, the patient’s blood circulation was completely stopped to enable precise intervention. The surgery was carried out under the supervision of Head Cardiothoracic Surgery Department Dr. Yogesh Niwariya. The surgical team included Dr. M Kishan, Dr. Surendra Yadav, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Dr Vikram Watti and Dr. Aditya Sirohi. From the anesthesia team, Ms. Pooja Singh and perfusionists Vedant Inamdar as well as Sushma Singh were part of this operation.
