  • Guidelines issued regarding HMPV

Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal
AIIMS Bhopal has issued detailed guidelines for safety and awareness in view of the increasing Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India.

The institute has emphasized on taking precautions and increasing public health awareness to prevent the spread of the virus. HMPV is a respiratory virus, first identified in 2001. The virus primarily affects the respiratory system and may be more vulnerable to young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Executive Director (Dr) Ajay Singh of AIIMS Bhopal said, AIIMS Bhopal is fully prepared to handle an outbreak of HMPV or any such respiratory infection. We have a team of experienced health workers, advanced testing laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities, which ensure that we can act quickly and effectively in any emergency. AIIMS Bhopal has state-of-the-art facilities for testing respiratory viruses, including RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction), which is considered the gold standard for detecting HMPV.

Symptoms of HMPV virus

Common symptoms of HMPV include fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, difficulty in breathing, wheezing and fatigue. In rare cases it can cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis. This virus can be serious for small children, the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases like asthma and heart disease. Some necessary precautions should be taken to prevent it.
