AIIMS Bhopal treats young patient with critical heart condition

  • Through advanced surgical intervention

Bhopal: Under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, the institution has once again demonstrated its excellence in medical research, innovation and patient care. Recently, a 20-year-old male patient, suffering from severe shortness of breath and palpitations was admitted to AIIMS Bhopal. The heart team, including specialists from Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), conducted a thorough assessment and discovered a mass in the patient’s right atrium and weakness in the right ventricle. Open heart surgery is generally performed by temporarily stopping the heart, with a heart-lung machine taking over its function.

However, in this severe condition, stopping the heart for surgery increases the risks associated with operation. Following this, it was decided that the patient would undergo a complex surgery involving a pump-assisted beating heart (in the beating heart) technique to stabilize his heart function.

Prof. Singh emphasized the importance of this achievement, saying, “This case exemplifies the importance of early intervention and the advanced capabilities of our multidisciplinary teams. Our Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery department’s expertise enabled us to provide this patient with the critical care he required.”

The surgical team comprised of Dr. M Kishan, Dr. Surendra Yadav, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Dr. Vikram Watti and Dr. Aditya Sirohi. Dr. Nagabhushanam from the anesthesia team, Ms Sushma and Mr. Vedant from the perfusionist team, and Ms Poonam and Ms Hansa from the nursing team were also part of this surgery.
