AIIMS Bhopal successfully removes 2 kg tumor in rare chest surgery

Bhopal: AIIMS Bhopal has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing a complex thoracic surgery to remove a massive tumor from a patient’s chest. Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) treated a 30-year-old man who had been suffering from a growing mass on the right side of his chest for over 18 months.

Despite seeking treatment at multiple hospitals, the patient found no relief and eventually approached AIIMS Bhopal. Investigations revealed a large tumor encasing several ribs and compressing the right lung. After detailed evaluation, the CTVS team decided to proceed with surgery.

Led by Dr. Yogesh Niwariya, Head of the CTVS Department, the surgical team successfully removed the tumor, which weighed approximately two kilograms and measured 20 centimeters in length. The patient recovered steadily after the operation and was later discharged in stable condition.

Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh stated, “This successful surgery is a significant achievement for Madhya Pradesh and neighboring areas. It reflects our commitment to providing advanced healthcare, especially to the underserved sections of society.”

Key contributors to the surgery included Dr. M. Kishan, Dr. Surendra Singh Yadav, Dr. Rahul Sharma, Dr. Vikram Watti, and Dr. Aditya Sirohi, along with support from Dr. Harish Kumar (Anaesthesia) and Dr. Deepak Krishna (Burns and Plastic Surgery).
