AIIMS Bhopal Set to Start Heart and Lung Transplants

  • Director Dr Sigh urges people to come ahead for organ donation

Bhopal, AIIMS Bhopal has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of two kidney transplants, marking a crucial step forward in the institute’s organ transplant program. Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized the importance of community involvement in promoting organ donation.

He stated, “The successful kidney transplants at AIIMS Bhopal are a testament to our dedicated team’s expertise and the strides we are making in organ transplantation. However, the true challenge lies in encouraging people to donate organs and save lives.”

Currently, eight more patients are on the waiting list, awaiting suitable donors to undergo kidney transplantation. The success of these kidney transplants reflects AIIMS Bhopal’s commitment to expanding its organ transplant services. Preparations are underway to initiate heart and lung transplants, with the institute aiming to deliver comprehensive multi-organ transplant services in the near future.

However, the journey toward a robust transplant program also presents challenges, including the need to overcome hesitation regarding organ donation. Despite advances in medical technology, many people are reluctant to pledge their organs, creating a gap between the number of patients in need and the availability of donor organs. It is imperative to raise awareness about the life-saving potential of organ donation, as one person can save up to eight lives through the donation of various organs.
