AIIMS Bhopal performs rare surgery

  • Mother and child’s lives saved

Bhopal, AIIMS Bhopal, under the leadership of Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, has successfully performed a rare and complex surgery, saving the life of a 24-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child. The patient, who had previously undergone heart valve surgery ten years ago, faced complications when her artificial heart valve became obstructed during pregnancy, causing severe breathing difficulties.

Performing surgery to fix the blocked valve before the baby reached full-term posed significant risks to both mother and child. The medical team decided to wait until the pregnancy was full-term to ensure the baby’s proper development. In a highly specialized procedure, AIIMS Bhopal’s multidisciplinary team tackled both the cesarean section and heart surgery in one operation.

The cesarean safely delivered the baby, and immediately after, the mother’s blocked heart valve was replaced, ensuring her survival. This extraordinary success was made possible by the collaboration between the Departments of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics, demonstrating AIIMS Bhopal’s expertise in handling high-risk, complex cases.

Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh expressed pride in the achievement, saying, “Managing both childbirth and life-saving heart surgery in one operation is a rare feat. This success reflects the exceptional teamwork and expertise at AIIMS Bhopal, ensuring the best outcomes for our patients.”
