AIADMK, DMDK to boycott Feb 5 bypoll to Erode East Assembly seat

Chennai, Jan 11 (UNI) The principal Opposition AIADMK and its ally, the DMDK in Tamil Nadu, on Saturday announced boycott of the February five bypoll to the Erode East Assembly constituency alleging the elections would not be held in a free and fair manner under the ruling DMK.

In a statement here, AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Edappadi K Palaniswami said his party was boycotting the polls as the DMK government and its Ministers would misuse their official machinery, unleash their money power and indulge in various atrocities to prevent people from casting their vote freely.

“Since the elections will not be held in free and fair manner, the AIADMK has decided to boycott it”, he added.

In a separate statement, late actor-politician Vijayakanth’s DMDK General Secretary Ms Premalatha Vijayakanth also announced that her party would also boycott the bypolls, toeing the line of its senior ally.

The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan last month, and the Congress has conceded the seat to the DMK following a request made by its President and Chief Minister M K Stalin, who announced Mr V C Chandrakumar as the party’s candidate for the bypoll.
