New Delhi, Nov 29 (UNI) The Indian government said on Friday that the US Department of Justice’s indictment of Gautam Adani and his associates on charges of bribery is a legal matter involving private firms and individuals and the DoJ, and the Indian government was not informed in advance on the issue.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said in response to questions:
“This is a legal matter involving private firms and individuals and the US Department of Justice. There are established procedures and legal avenues in such cases which we believe would be followed.
The Government of India was not informed in advance on the issue.”
“Any request by a foreign government for service of summons / arrest warrant is part of mutual legal assistance. Such requests are examined on merits. We have not received any request on this case from the US side,” he stated.
Adani and seven of his associates, including his nephew Sagar Adani, have been charged with conspiracy to commit securities and wire fraud by the DoJ.
The DoJ indictment alleges that the defendants agreed to pay bribes to Indian government officials to secure lucrative renewable energy contracts in India.
The Adani Group has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and vowing to seek “all possible legal recourse”.
