AAP leader Atishi condemns attack on Delhi CM

New Delhi, Aug 20 (UNI) Former Delhi CM and leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Atishi, has called the assault on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta “deeply condemnable”.

In a post on X, she wrote, “In a democracy, there is a place for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence.”

She also urged Delhi Police to take the strictest action against those responsible and expressed hope that the Chief Minister had not suffered any harm.

“It is hoped that Delhi Police will take the strictest action against the culprits. It is hoped that the Chief Minister is completely safe,” she wrote.

The incident has sparked widespread concern across the capital’s political circles, with calls for heightened security and a deeper investigation into the motives behind the attack.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the attack, a sentiment echoed by his party colleague and minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who stated, “There is no place for violence, the attack can’t be justified,” adding that the “CM will continue working for the welfare of the people.”

The assailant, posing as a complainant, gained access to the hearing by carrying a few documents. He approached the Chief Minister under the pretext of handing over a petition and discussing a problem before suddenly attacking her.

He allegedly slapped the CM and pulled her hair.

Security personnel immediately intervened and subdued the attacker. Police confirmed the Chief Minister is safe and did not sustain major injuries.

A full investigation is underway to determine the motives behind the attack, and security has been significantly tightened at the CM House. The Jan Sunwai has been temporarily suspended for a security review.
