New Delhi, Jan 8 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of circulating a manipulated video clip in the Delhi Assembly that it claims deliberately insulted the Sikh community and dragged the names of Sikh Gurus into politics.
The party demanded strict action against those responsible.
Senior AAP leader and Chief Whip Sanjeev Jha, addressing a press conference, presented what he stated were two versions of a video from Wednesday’s proceedings. He alleged that an original clip showed Leader of Opposition Atishi raising a point about air pollution during the Lieutenant Governor’s address.
A second, edited version, he claimed, was circulated by BJP members to falsely suggest that the remarks were made during a discussion on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom anniversary, thereby hurting religious sentiments.
“The BJP tampered with that video and dragged Guru Sahib’s name into it. These people are so disgraceful that for their dirty politics, they are not even sparing the name of Guru Sahib,” Jha stated.
Jha outlined three demands: immediate release of the Assembly’s raw video footage, termination of BJP Minister Kapil Mishra’s membership for allegedly misleading the House, and a six-month suspension for all BJP MLAs who shared the edited clip.
He clarified that the purported incident occurred during the transition to the LG’s address, not during the discussion on the Sikh Guru. Jha argued that the Speaker, seated nearby, did not react at the time, indicating the remarks were about pollution.
Separately, AAP MLA Jarnail Singh linked the controversy to the BJP’s political standing. “No matter how much drama they perform or try to portray themselves as being close to Sikhs, Sikhs know their true reality,” he said.
He also accused the BJP of attempting to divert attention from a recent statement by a BJP minister regarding freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, which had sparked controversy.
