Ukraine raises concern over detention of its citizens in India, seeks transparent probe

New Delhi, Mar 19 (UNI) The Embassy of Ukraine in India on Thursday expressed serious concern over the detention of six Ukrainian nationals in India, stating that the case may have a “politically motivated” dimension.

In a press release, the embassy cited publicly available information and media reports suggesting that the case may have been initiated based on inputs provided by Russia, raising questions about its credibility.

Ukraine firmly rejected any allegations linking it to terrorism, asserting that it remains a victim of terror itself.

“Ukraine is a state that faces the consequences of Russian terror on a daily basis and takes a principled and uncompromising stance in combating terrorism in all its forms,” the statement said.

The embassy highlighted that both India and Ukraine share a strong and consistent position against terrorism, referencing the joint statement issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ukraine in August 2024, where both sides condemned terrorism in all forms and called for global cooperation to combat it.

Emphasising due process, Ukraine stated that any allegations related to terrorism must be examined based on verified facts, transparent procedures, and full intergovernmental cooperation.

The embassy called for an objective, impartial, and transparent investigation into the case and expressed readiness to cooperate closely with Indian authorities under existing bilateral legal frameworks.

It also stressed that Ukraine has no interest in any activity that could threaten India’s security and instead remains committed to strengthening ties with India.

The statement further accused Russia of attempting to create divisions between friendly nations, including India and Ukraine.

“Any attempts to use this case to discredit Ukraine or undermine Ukraine-India relations appear to be a deliberate effort to harm the bilateral partnership,” the embassy said.

Ukraine expressed confidence that Indian authorities would ensure due legal process, transparency, and protection of the rights of the detained Ukrainian citizens, in line with international law and the traditionally strong ties between the two countries.
