Keylong, Mar 18 (UNI) Authorities have issued a fresh weather alert for Lahaul-Spiti district, warning of a spell of rain and snowfall over the next few days, with conditions likely to intensify during the ongoing wet spell.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, light to moderate rain and snowfall is very likely at many places in Lahaul-Spiti over the next few hours and days.
The nowcast alert indicates active weather conditions across the district, particularly in higher reaches, with the possibility of reduced visibility and slippery roads.
The warning comes in continuation of the earlier advisory issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Lahaul Spiti which had cautioned about heavy snowfall between March 18 and March 20.
Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during this period. Officials have highlighted potential impacts including disruption of road connectivity, especially on high-altitude routes, and risks associated with snow accumulation.
Drivers have been advised to exercise caution due to icy and slippery road conditions. The administration has also warned of possible damage to horticulture and local infrastructure due to ongoing weather activity.
People have been advised to stay indoors during intense spells, avoid venturing near vulnerable areas, and strictly follow safety guidelines.
All government departments and local bodies have been asked to remain on alert and ensure preparedness for any emergency situation. Residents have been urged to stay updated with official advisories and report any untoward incident to the District Emergency Operation Centre.
Authorities reiterated that adherence to advisories is crucial to prevent loss of life and property as the district braces for continued snowfall and adverse weather conditions.
