Man who killed mother-in-law and brother-in-law shot dead in police encounter in Bareilly

Bareilly, March 17 (UNI) A man accused of murdering his mother-in-law and brother-in-law in Bareilly was killed in a police encounter on Tuesday morning.

According to Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anurag Arya, the accused, identified as Afasar Khan alias Baura, opened fire on police when he was surrounded during an operation in the Izzatnagar police station area around 6 a.m.

Police had received a tip-off from an informant about the suspect’s location. When the police team tried to arrest him, he allegedly fired at them. In retaliatory firing by the police, the accused was shot. He was taken to the district hospital but died on the way.

The incident occurred about 17 hours after the accused allegedly attacked his family members during a community meeting (panchayat) on Monday afternoon.

Afasar Khan, a resident of Rahpura in Bareilly, had been involved in a dispute with his wife, Saima. Due to the conflict, Saima had been staying at her parental home for the past five days. A panchayat was convened on Monday at the house of jeweller Rashid Khan, located about 50 meters from Afasar’s residence, to resolve the dispute.

During the meeting, Afasar suddenly became aggressive and attacked his mother-in-law Asma (54) and brother-in-law Adil (20) with a knife, stabbing them multiple times. Both died on the spot.

When his wife Saima tried to intervene, he also attacked her with the knife, leaving her seriously injured. She was rushed to a private hospital, where her condition remains critical.

After the attack, the accused fled the scene. Police formed five teams to track him down and conducted raids at several locations before the encounter on Tuesday morning.

Afasar is survived by two children — Faiz (8) and Aisha (5).
