Iran ready for war if necessary, but prefers diplomacy: Ambassador Fathali

New Delhi, March 13 (UNI) Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, on Friday reiterated that while Tehran does not seek war, it is prepared to defend itself if necessary.

“We have announced several times that we do not want war, but we are ready for it if necessary. We have re-entered negotiations with the United States, but those talks were disturbed and destroyed at the table,” Fathali said. “Now we say to all governments: Iran does not want war, but Iran is ready for it.”

“We are trying to solve the problem, and you can expect good news in the near future,” the envoy said.

Speaking on recent talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ebrahim Raisi Pezeshkian, Fathali described the discussions as positive, saying both leaders “believe they should try their best” to maintain dialogue.

Fathali also addressed the situation in Iran and the broader region, highlighting the violence in recent weeks, including attacks on schools and the deaths of prominent political, military, and defense figures. He described these incidents as “exceedingly complex and deeply alarming,” and condemned attacks on civilians in Gaza.

“These innocent children were students who had come to study in the hope of building a better future, yet they fell victim to the violence and brutality of the usurping Zionist regime and the United States,” he said.

The ambassador emphasized Iran’s preference for diplomacy while underlining that the country remains prepared to respond to any military threat, and called on the international community to recognize Tehran’s position.

At the International Quds Day Conference, Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, said, “Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the people of India for the manner in which they conveyed their condolences and sympathies regarding the martyrdom of our leader. I am deeply thankful to all of you. Such messages and expressions from you serve as a testament to the depth of the historical and cultural ties that have long existed between India and Iran; the true extent of this profound bond can be gauged by the sentiments expressed by the people here.”

External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal informed on Thursday that PM Modi spoke to the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday.

“PM Modi highlighted India’s priorities regarding the safety, security, and interests of Indian citizens during their conversation. At the same time, he also mentioned the importance of the transit of energy and essential materials,” Jaiswal said.

“PM Modi expressed his deep concerns over the security situation that has developed in the region. He also reiterated India’s position that people should move forward through dialogue and diplomacy, so that the conflict in that region can be resolved,” Jaiswal added.
