Kerr claims ODI hat-trick as New Zealand sweep Zimbabwe series

Dunedin, March 11 (UNI) Melie Kerr became the third New Zealand woman to claim an ODI hat-trick as New Zealand completed a comprehensive series sweep over Zimbabwe with a 200-run victory in Dunedin on Wednesday, as per the International Cricket Council (ICC) website.

Kerr delivered a dominant all-round performance at University Oval, scoring 80 as New Zealand posted a commanding 303/6 before returning with the ball to claim a hat-trick and finish with a five-wicket haul.

The 24-year-old completed her hat-trick in the 24th over of Zimbabwe’s chase, dismissing Adel Zimunu, Audrey Mazvishaya and Tendai Makusha in successive deliveries.

Kerr’s five-wicket haul was her third in ODI cricket and her second of the series after a remarkable seven-wicket performance in the previous match.

Her hat-trick was only the third in women’s ODIs for New Zealand and the first since Emily Drumm achieved the feat against Australia women’s cricket team at Adelaide Oval in February 1996.

Overall, Kerr became the 14th bowler in women’s ODI history to take a hat-trick, joining recent achievers such as Charlie Dean of England women’s cricket team, who did so against South Africa women’s cricket team in 2024, and Chloe Tryon of South Africa, who accomplished the feat against Sri Lanka women’s cricket team in 2025.

Kerr was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series, finishing the three-match series with 140 runs and 16 wickets.

The series formed part of the ICC Women’s Championship, with Zimbabwe competing in the tournament for the first time as one of the 11 participating teams.
