Shiv Pratap Shukla appointed Telangana Governor; Jishnu Dev Varma shifted to Maharashtra

Hyderabad, March 6 (UNI) The Central Government on Thursday made a series of gubernatorial appointments for nine states and union Territories following the resignation of West Bengal Governor Dr C V Ananda Bose.

According to a communiqué issued by the President of India late Thursday night, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana. The current Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been transferred and appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.

Shukla, who assumed office as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh on February 18, 2023, will now take charge as the Governor of Telangana.

Born on April 1, 1952, in Rudrapur village of Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh, Shukla has had a long political career. He completed his schooling in Rudrapur and pursued his college education in Gorakhpur, graduating in Law. During his early years, he served as the organisational secretary of the BJP’s student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), before formally joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1983.

Shukla first entered electoral politics in 1989 when he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Gorakhpur City Assembly constituency. He was re-elected in 1991 and again won Assembly elections in 1993 and 1996. During his political career in Uttar Pradesh, he served as a minister in the governments headed by Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta and Rajnath Singh.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh on June 10, 2016, and later served as union Minister of State for Finance in the Narendra Modi government from September 3, 2017. He remained a member of the Rajya Sabha until July 2022.

In the broader reshuffle announced by the President, several other appointments were also made. R. N. Ravi, currently Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as Governor of West Bengal. Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Kerala, will discharge the functions of Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed Governor of Nagaland, while Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain will serve as Governor of Bihar. Kavinder Gupta, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Further, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

The communiqué stated that the appointments will take effect from the dates the respective appointees assume charge of their offices.
