Mumbai, March 3 (UNI) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced that the Indian Women’s Cricket Team has been shortlisted for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards under the World Team of the Year category.
First instituted in 2000, the annual awards honour the greatest and most inspirational sporting achievements from across the globe. The nomination follows a landmark year for Indian cricket, highlighted by the team’s historic maiden triumph at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025.
The title win marked India’s first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup crown and is widely regarded as a defining moment in the history of the women’s game in the country. Throughout the tournament, the Indian side showcased exceptional composure and collective resilience, overcoming top-ranked opponents on their way to lifting the trophy. The victory was seen as the culmination of years of steady growth, enhanced investment and structural development in women’s cricket in India.
The Indian team features on a distinguished shortlist alongside some of the most accomplished teams in world sport, including Paris Saint-Germain (Football – France), McLaren (Formula 1 – UK), European Ryder Cup Team (Golf – Europe), England women’s national football team (Football – UK), and Oklahoma City Thunder (Basketball – USA).
The shortlists across categories are determined by votes from more than 1,000 sports media representatives spanning over 70 countries, while the winners are selected by the Laureus World Sports Academy. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 20 in Madrid, Spain.
BCCI President Mithun Manhas described the nomination as a moment of immense pride for Indian cricket. He said the women’s team had demonstrated extraordinary skill, character and consistency, culminating in their historic 2025 World Cup victory. Being recognised alongside some of the most celebrated teams in global sport, he noted, underscored their hard work and the rising stature of women’s cricket in India.
Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia termed the 2025 World Cup triumph a watershed moment not only for the team but for the entire cricketing ecosystem in the country. He said the Laureus nomination reflected the global impact of their achievement and added that the BCCI remains committed to strengthening the support systems necessary to sustain such success in the years ahead.
