Jammu and Kashmir Police urge restraint amid pro Iran protests

Srinagar, (UNI) Amid series of clashes during the ongoing pro Iran protests, J&K Police on Monday appealed for peace and restraint.
Police said they respect the right of citizens to express themselves peacefully through lawful means, but warned that incidents of rioting, stone-pelting, clashes and disruption of public order are unacceptable.
“In view of recent developments in middle east, we respect the right of citizens to peacefully express through lawful means. However, incidents of rioting, stone-pelting, clashes & disruption of public order at some places are not acceptable,” J&K police said on X.
“Violence, destruction of property, and confrontation with security forces lead to injuries, loss of life, restrictions, closure of educational institutions, and hardship for families, traders, students, and daily wagers. We appeal to all sections of society to exercise restraint and refrain from violence & provocation. Police will take strict legal action against instigators and miscreants involved in unlawful activities,” police said, adding “authorities remain committed to uphold the rule of law and protecting life and property.”
Over the last two days, Kashmir has witnessed massive protests over the killing of Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in strikes by the US and Israel. While protests were peaceful of Sunday, there were reports of clashes at several places between the protester and police.
Hours before the police appeal, Member of Parliament Srinagar and estranged National Conference Leader Ruhullah Mehdi accused police of “beating grieving mothers and sisters.”
In a separate appeal, former J&K Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti urged the J&K police chief, Nalin Prabhat, to release women detained during protests in the region.
“In the light of worrying reports of women protestors detained across Kashmir for expressing solidarity over the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei I urge DGP @JmuKmrPoliceto issue immediate orders for their release. This is a time of mourning for us & the situation must be handled with compassion and sensitivity,” Mehbooba said on X.
