Lucknow, (UNI) At least three people were killed and eight others injured after an SUV overturned on the Purvanchal Expressway near Kabulpur village under the Loni Katra police station limits today, police said.
According to officials, the vehicle was travelling from Lucknow to Ayodhya when one of its rear tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. The SUV reportedly overturned multiple times on the expressway.
Security personnel from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), along with the Loni Katra police, rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. The injured passengers were pulled out of the severely damaged vehicle and taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Gosainganj, Lucknow district, before being referred to a hospital in Lucknow for further treatment.
Police identified the deceased as Baburam, Rekha and Shanti Devi, who succumbed to their injuries during treatment in Lucknow.
The injured included driver Ajit Kumar of Sukhkha Pur village, Vansh Bahadur of Devipur, Nirmala, Rajkumar, Shyam Kali, Indrapati, Siyalal of Pandeypurwa, and Parana, among others. All are residents of villages under the Inayatnagar police station area in Ayodhya district.
Loni Katra Station House Officer Abhay Kumar Maurya said that police personnel accompanied the victims in ambulances. Family members from Ayodhya are reaching Lucknow. The bodies will be sent for post-mortem examination.
Further investigation into the accident is underway.
