New Delhi, Feb 27 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid heartfelt tributes to freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad on his martyrdom day, remembering his unparalleled sacrifice in India’s struggle for independence.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said, “On the martyrdom day of Chandrashekhar Azad, the brave son of Mother India, I pay my respectful tribute to him. He sacrificed everything to free Mother India from the chains of slavery, for which he will always be remembered.”
Azad, one of the most prominent revolutionaries of the Indian freedom movement, is revered for his courage and unwavering commitment to ending British colonial rule. Born in 1906, he became involved in the independence movement as a teenager and later emerged as a key figure in the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
He worked closely with revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh and played a crucial role in reorganizing revolutionary activities in northern India. Azad’s defiance became legendary after he vowed never to be captured alive by British authorities — a pledge he upheld on February 27, 1931, when he shot himself during a police encounter at Alfred Park in Allahabad (now Prayagraj).
Political leaders, historians, and citizens across the country also paid homage, recalling Azad’s bravery and patriotism.
The Prime Minister’s message added to the nationwide tributes, underscoring Azad’s enduring legacy as a revolutionary who dedicated his life to securing India’s independence.
