Solan, (UNI) A 35-year-old road accident victim with a grossly deformed foot and ankle regained his ability to walk again after doctors at a private hospital in Mohali used advanced minimally invasive poke-hole techniques, which successfully salvaged the limb.
Dr Chandan Narang, Consultant, Foot and Ankle Surgery at Fortis Hospital Mohali, told mediaperons on Wednesday that the patient had undergone multiple surgeries elsewhere and was eventually advised amputation due to poor skin condition, compromised nerves and blood vessels, and his inability to walk.
However, following detailed medical evaluation, he was treated by using advanced Minimally-Invasive Poke-Hole Techniques, correcting the deformity without large incisions — thereby protecting fragile skin, nerves and vascular structures. The limb was successfully salvaged and the alignment was restored, and the patient was able to walk again, thereby avoiding amputation.
Shedding light on the foot and ankle surgery, Dr Narang said, “Foot and ankle deformities can result from trauma, neurological conditions, stroke or long-standing injuries. In such cases, traditional open surgery carries a high risk, particularly when the skin, nerves or blood supply are compromised.
“A Minimally-Invasive Surgery allows us to correct deformities, restore balance, and help patients walk again with significantly less trauma. Our focus is limb salvage, functional recovery and early mobilization with minimal scarring,” he added.
