Bengal SIR: SC allows judicial officers from neighbouring states, if required

New Delhi, Feb 24 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that district judges from outside should be deployed, if required, for expediting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal.

District judges, additional district judges, including the retired ones could be deployed for the purpose, the court said.

The bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipin Pancholi today allowed deployment of civil judge to expedite the work.

The apex court said the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court can approach the CJs of the Orissa and Jharkhand High Courts to seek for support of judicial officers from the two states.

“If the High Court Chief Justice feels that further human resource is needed he may approach chief Justices of neighboring states – Orissa and Jharkhand High Court — to draw serving and retired judicial officers of those states in similar rank who shall be entrusted to complete the verification work in west bengal. Travel, boarding, lodging of such officers shall be borne by the Election Commission of India,” the apex court said.

The top court also said the ECI can go ahead with publication of the final list on February 28 and thereafter supplementary list can be published on continuous basis.

Highlighting the enormity of the exercise, 250 judicial officers have been tasked to decide 50 lakh cases having logical discrepancy and also which come in the unmapped category.
