Bhopal: On the sixth day of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly session, the Congress Legislature Party staged a symbolic protest within the Assembly premises, opposing the proposed India–US trade deal and what it termed anti-farmer policies of the Centre and the state government. The demonstration was led by Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar.

Congress MLAs gathered before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, wearing masks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump, to voice their opposition to what they described as injustice towards farmers. Through the protest, the party conveyed that any compromise on farmers’ interests would be unacceptable.

Addressing the media, Singhar said the demonstration was not merely political symbolism but a firm stand to safeguard the rights, dignity and future of the nation’s farmers. He warned that the India–US trade agreement could pose a serious threat if cheaper imports of soybean, maize and cotton were allowed into Indian markets, adversely affecting farmers, agricultural mandis and the rural economy.

He alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party government has consistently pursued anti-farmer policies. The Congress, he asserted, would continue its struggle from the streets to the Assembly to defend the interests of the farming community and demanded comprehensive safeguards before entering any international trade pact.
