India asks its citizens in Mexico to take precautions about their safety, issues Advisory

New Delhi, Feb 23 (UNI) India has advised its nationals in Mexico to take precautions about their safety and avoid areas ‘’around law enforcement activity’’ in the wake of violence after the killing of a drug lord in a gun battle with Mexican Police last night.

Drug lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, nick-named ‘El Mencho’, of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was wounded in a clash with soldiers. He died while being flown to Mexico City. His death sparked off widespread violence in the area.

The Indian Embassy, in its advisory, asked Indian citizens to avoid areas around law enforcement activity, be aware of surroundings, Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements outside.

The Advisory said ‘’Dear all Indian nationals in Mexico: There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, Indian nationals in Jalisco State (areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (areas of Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State should shelter in place until further notice.’’

‘’Actions to Take: Avoid areas around law enforcement activity. Be aware of your surroundings. Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements outside your shelter. Monitor local media for updates. Follow the directions of local authorities and in case of emergency, call 911. Avoid crowds. Keep family and friends advised of your location and well-being via phone, text, and social media.

As of late 2023, the Indian community in Mexico, including non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin, was estimated to be approximately 8,000 to 10,650. While the 2020 census identified 1,825 legal Indian immigrants in the country, the total number fluctuates due to increased tourism, business, and transit migration.
