New Delhi, Feb 22 (UNI) Actor Aamir Khan, celebrated for his versatility and record-breaking box office run, recently reflected on a few films he believed deserved far greater commercial success.
The 60-year-old star pointed to two early-career favorites, “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar” and “Andaz Apna Apna”, admitting he had expected both to perform much better in theaters.
“There were actually two films that, at that time, had not worked as well as we thought they would. One of them was ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.’ Commercially, it didn’t do well at that time. It did alright; it wasn’t a flop or anything. It was appreciated and did a certain amount of business, but not the kind of business one would imagine today,” Aamir told Variety India.
Speaking about “Andaz Apna Apna,” he said he had strong faith in the project from the start. “I really believed in that film. I thought it was really funny, but when it came out, it didn’t do well. People didn’t get the humor. Maybe it was the timing. But today it’s considered a cult classic. Almost every generation has seen it. Even 18-year-olds have watched it. I’m shocked. Those are the two films from early in my career that I expected would do much better than they actually did.”
Aamir also shared insights into the making of his 2014 blockbuster “PK,” revealing that despite its massive success, he and director Rajkumar Hirani were not entirely satisfied with the final version.
“In the case of ‘PK,’ which was a huge success, both Raju and I were not fully happy with the film because he had originally written a different script. The second half was slightly different from what we ended up making. But another film, ‘OMG, Oh My God!,’ released just before us, and the themes were somewhat similar,” he explained.
Although the storylines differed, with “PK” centering on an alien protagonist, Aamir said Hirani felt strongly about revising the latter portion of the film to avoid thematic overlap with the Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal-starrer.
“Raju was very adamant that we change our second half, and we did. The film became a big success, but before release, we had discussed how we weren’t completely happy with it. Still, we felt it was the best we could have done under the circumstances. Luckily, it worked out,” Aamir said to Variety India.
“PK,” also starring Anushka Sharma, the late Sushant Singh Rajput, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt, went on to become the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2014.
