Girl loses fingers at School in Bengaluru; Parents allege staff negligence

Bengaluru, Feb 14 (UNI) A six-year old girl sustained a serious injury at a government school in Tumakuru district after two of her fingers were severed in an accident during the mid-day meal, her parents alleged, accusing school authorities of gross negligence.

The incident occurred on February 9 at Government Model Higher Primary School in Guluru village when the Class 1 student, Chinmayidevi, reportedly got her hand caught in the gap of an iron door while lining up for lunch.

According to her mother, GH Ambhika, the door was pushed from behind, leading to the amputation of two fingers..

The parents have alleged gross negligence on the part of school authorities, claiming the severed fingers were disposed of by staff.

Ambhika alleged that a teacher called around 2.30 pm, describing it as a “minor injury,” but on reaching the school, the parents found the girl unconscious and bleeding.

They alleged that no immediate medical aid was provided and that the girl was kept on the school premises until her parents arrived. The girl was later taken to Tumakuru Government Hospital on her father’s motorcycle.

The parents have lodged a complaint against the headmaster Nagesh , the teacher, Cluster Resource Person Venkatesh, and Block Education Officer Hanumanthappa for gross negligence. They alleged that when they requested the severed fingers, the staff claimed they had been thrown away to avoid “frightening” other children.

Further, the complaint stated that when a local Gram Panchayat member contacted the BEO about the incident, Hanumanthappa allegedly dismissed the matter and made derogatory caste-based remarks before ending the call.

An FIR has been registered at Tumakuru Rural Police Station under Sections 125(a), 238, and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act. Investigations are currently underway.
