India’s retail inflation stood at 2.75 Pc in Jan with new base year CPI series

New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) The Year-on-Year inflation rate based on All India Consumer Price Index (CPI) with base year 2024 for Jan 2026 stood at 2.75 per cent (provisional) over corresponding period last year, an official statement said here on Thursday.

Corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban areas were 2.33 per cent and 2.77 per cent, respectively.

The Year-on-Year food inflation for Jan was 2.13 per cent (provisional) and housing inflation stood at 2.05 per cent, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said in a statement.

The Government has released this Consumer Price Index (CPI) with a new base year 2024 and the item basket and the corresponding weights are based on Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24.

The CPI 2024 series adopts the Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose (COICOP) 2018, replacing the earlier structure comprising six broad groups.

This is the latest classification system developed by the United Nations Statistics Division.

This exercise is done for enhancing the coverage and representativeness of the inflation measure.
