Chennai, Feb 9 (UNI) With the extended Northeast monsoon having withdrawn despite which the Chennai city and its neighnouring districts facing chilly weather conditions, especially in the morning hours, the Met office on Monday predicted fog formation over the Chennai airport.
Because on prevailing fog conditions flight operations, both departure and arrival were delayed leading to their rescheduling over the last few days.
It said based on the current weather pattern analysis, there is a high probability of fog formation over Chennai Airport and nearby areas during the early morning hours between 06:30 and 08:30 IST.
The prevailing clear sky conditions are expected to enhance night-time radiational cooling, leading to increased heat loss from the Earth’s surface.
This will result in a drop in surface temperature and the development of a temperature inversion in the lower levels of the atmosphere.
At present, the prevailing easterly wind is transporting moisture from the Bay of Bengal into inland areas, increasing low-level moisture availability.
It said the combination of high moisture content, cool surface temperatures, and temperature inversion will create favorable conditions for fog formation over Chennai Airport and surrounding regions.
Additionally, light and calm wind conditions are expected, which will further support fog development by limiting horizontal dispersion.
As a result, fog is likely to significantly reduce visibility during the early morning hours, particularly between 06:30 AM and 08:30 AM. Similar to today, reduced visibility conditions are expected again tomorrow during the early morning period.
