Bhopal: As registration for wheat procurement will begin soon in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress has questioned the State government’s commitment to farmers, alleging a sharp reduction in the promised bonus amount.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, Congress spokesperson Rahul Raj said that while the procurement process has formally started, farmers are still not receiving the assured price of Rs 2,700 per quintal. He alleged that the government had earlier promised a bonus of Rs 175 per quintal but has now reduced it to just Rs 25 without any clear explanation.
Raising concern over the move, Raj asked why the bonus amount was slashed so drastically and whether this decision reflects the government’s idea of supporting farmers during the agricultural season. He said the reduction would directly affect farmers’ income at a time when input costs are rising steadily.
The Congress leader demanded clarity from the State government and urged it to honour its commitments made to farmers before the procurement season.
