New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) The Election Commission of India on Friday extended the deadline for filing claims and objections in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh by a month, pushing the last date to March 6, 2026. The revision was being carried out with January 1, 2026 as the qualifying date.
The decision comes after the Commission considered a request from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh, seeking more time to facilitate wider public participation in the revision process.
“In exercise of the powers conferred under the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, the Commission has decided to extend the period for filing claims and objections up to 06.03.2026,” the ECI said in its notification.
The draft electoral rolls for Uttar Pradesh were published on January 6, 2026, and the original window for submitting claims and objections was scheduled to close on February 6, 2026. With the extension, electors will now have an additional month to seek inclusion of their names, correction of details, or deletion of ineligible entries.
Election officials said the move was aimed at ensuring that “no eligible voter is left out” and that the rolls are updated in a transparent and inclusive manner. “The Commission has taken into account field-level feedback and other relevant factors before granting the extension,” an official source said.
The Special Intensive Revision in Uttar Pradesh is part of a larger exercise announced by the ECI in October 2025, covering 12 States and union Territories—Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Such intensive revisions are periodically undertaken to clean up electoral rolls by removing duplicate or ineligible entries and adding new voters, particularly young electors and those who have recently migrated.
The Commission has urged eligible voters in Uttar Pradesh to use the extended period to verify their details and submit necessary forms, either online or through designated electoral offices, to ensure accurate and up-to-date voter lists ahead of future elections.
