New Delhi, Jan 30 (UNI) After years of being on the run from trial, a man impersonating an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer and declared a proclaimed offender by a Delhi court was arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police, an officer said on Friday.
According to the police, the accused, Vimal Bhat, alias Sonu, from Ghaziabad’s Raj Nagar Extension, was apprehended on Thursday from the Patparganj Industrial Area in East Delhi.
“He was declared a proclaimed offender on August 4, 2025, in connection with an FIR registered at Dwarka South police station,” said Vikram Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch).
“The team acted on specific intelligence on the accused’s movement. Following a discreet deployment, our officers identified and nabbed Bhat around 3.25 pm with the help of a secret informer,” Singh said.
A probe into the matter revealed that the accused was masquerading as an IPS officer posted in the Intelligence Bureau to deceive and intimidate members of the public.
“He allegedly used a fake IB identity card and moved around in a vehicle fitted with ‘Police’ stickers, a siren, and a loudhailer to lend credibility to his false claims,” the officer added.
During the earlier investigation, police had recovered a fake Intelligence Bureau ID card, police-style accessories, a walkie-talkie, a siren, a loud hailer, and forged documents purportedly issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
These recoveries formed the basis for charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Further verification revealed the accused’s involvement in multiple other criminal cases, including a check bounce case in Udhampur, a fatal accident case in Uttarakhand, and serious offences registered at Naraina police station.
The accused has now been formally arrested, said the officer, adding the inquiry is ongoing.
