AAP alleges Delhi BJP government failed to act on private school fee hikes

New Delhi, Jan 25 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday accused the BJP led Delhi government of failing to take action against private schools that raised fees arbitrarily, despite conducting financial audits.

AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bhardwaj made the allegations based on responses given by Education Minister Ashish Sood during the recent Delhi Assembly session.

According to Bhardwaj, the minister’s written replies revealed that no private school has refunded the increased fees to parents, and no punitive action has been initiated against schools despite audits of 1,624 institutions. Bhardwaj also claimed that the government does not maintain records of which schools raised fees in April 2025 or by how much.

The issue dates back to the beginning of the 2025–26 academic session when numerous private schools increased fees by 20 per cent to 80 per cent, leading to widespread protests by parents. In response, the Delhi government had promised audits and action against profiteering schools.

Bhardwaj further highlighted the case of DPS Dwarka, where allegations of harassing students over unpaid fees were made. He stated that although a committee headed by the District Magistrate recommended filing an FIR, no police complaint has been registered. The education minister reportedly said the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, a claim Bhardwaj called misleading, as he insisted no court has barred such action.

The AAP has alleged that the audit process was merely an eyewash and that the government is protecting private schools rather than enforcing accountability. The party claims this reflects a deeper understanding between the BJP government and private school managements.

The ruling party is yet to react to the allegations.
