Fire at northwest Delhi banquet hall injures four, one critical: Police

New Delhi, 24 Jan (UNI) A fire erupted at a banquet hall in Adarsh Nagar, northeast of Delhi, on Saturday afternoon, injuring at least four people, Delhi Police said.

One of the injured is reported to be in a serious condition, they said.

“A PCR call about the blaze was received around 12.50 pm, after which local police teams rushed to the spot and found that three fire tenders had already arrived,” they said, adding that the fire had been brought under control.

Adding to his statement further, he mentioned that initially, no injured persons were found at the scene.

During a preliminary inquiry, police were informed that two injured persons had been taken to a hospital; however, no immediate confirmation was received from nearby hospitals, the officer added.

Around 4 pm, a subsequent call to the Prashant Vihar police station reported that four persons were injured in a fire during a ‘Bhandara’ at a local banquet hall, police said.

“Four people reportedly sustained burn injuries, one of whom is said to be in a serious condition. The exact circumstances and sequence of events are being verified,” a senior police officer said.

The police suspect that the fire broke out during food preparation for the religious feast; however, the exact cause is still under probe.

Officials said forensic and fire department teams are expected to inspect the premises to determine the source of the fire.

The banquet hall owner has not been cooperating and will be questioned to verify facts and confirm safety measures and event permissions, police said.

Further probes are ongoing to ascertain responsibility and check for any negligence or breach of fire safety norms, they said.
