Kochi, Jan 23 (UNI) With the aim of expediting passenger security checks and easing congestion at screening points, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has commissioned full-body scanners on a trial basis at the airport.
An Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), intended to speed up the movement of cabin baggage during security screening, has also been introduced as part of the initiative to enhance operational efficiency.
The new systems are expected to significantly reduce waiting time at security checkpoints while improving the overall passenger experience. The full-body scanners, once fully operational, are designed to streamline the screening process by minimising manual intervention.
Currently, passenger screening at both the Domestic and International Terminals is conducted through about 32 Door Frame Metal Detector (DFMD) points, followed by manual frisking.
With the introduction of full-body scanners and subject to regulatory approval from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the security screening process is expected to become fully automated, enabling completion of checks without physical contact.
At present, one full-body scanner has been installed each at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 as part of the trial run.
