Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Congress on Saturday organised a one-day hunger strike at Roshanpura Square under the leadership of district president Praveen Saxena, protesting the recent deaths and illness of thousands allegedly caused by contaminated water supplied by the Indore Municipal Corporation.

Addressing the gathering, District Mahila Congress president Sabera Zaki said that despite the loss of human lives and the large number of people falling ill, the state government had failed to learn any lessons or take effective corrective measures. She alleged that Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, had gone to Indore to meet bereaved families, but the district administration erected barricades to restrict his movement.

Zaki further stated that the municipal corporation collects heavy taxes from citizens and is duty-bound to ensure the supply of clean drinking water and proper sanitation. She demanded strict action against those responsible for the lapse, along with adequate compensation and improved medical facilities for the affected families.

On the occasion, former Pradesh Mahila Congress president Vibha Patel, former Lok Sabha candidate Arun Shrivastava, former Huzur Assembly candidate Naresh Gyan Chandani, Municipal Corporation Leader of the Opposition, Shabista Zaki, Pradesh Congress general secretary Amit Sharma, former District Youth Congress president Abhishek Sharma, Pradesh Congress secretary Rajkumar Singh, Deepchand Yadav, former District Mahila Congress president Santosh Kansana, Youth Congress executive district president Amit Khatri, spokesperson Jitendra Mishra, corporator and block president Ashok Maran, former corporator Waheed Lashkari, Block Congress presidents Faheem Bakhsh, Vishesh Rai Saxena and Yashwant Yadav, along with Rahul Singh Rathore, Deepu Tomar, Sonu Tomar, Anil Jadhav and Sushil Prajapati, were present in large numbers.
