Bhopal: Dozens of innocent citizens have lost their lives and hundreds have fallen seriously ill due to contaminated drinking water supply in Indore and several other districts of Madhya Pradesh, a crisis the Indian Youth Congress has described as the result of government negligence and administrative insensitivity rather than a natural calamity.

To highlight the grave public health emergency, the Indian Youth Congress observed a seven-day relay hunger strike, which concluded on January 15, 2026, in the presence of senior party leaders. The organisation alleged that despite the protest, neither ministers nor senior officials visited the agitation site or engaged with affected families.

In this context, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, will visit Indore on January 17 to meet bereaved families, express solidarity and draw national attention to the issue. Youth Congress leaders stated that the movement will now continue as a statewide padyatra under the guidance of the party’s national leadership, focusing on justice, accountability and human dignity.

The Youth Congress has demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for victims’ families, a High Court-monitored independent probe, and strict legal action against those responsible, asserting that the agitation will continue until accountability is fixed.
