New Delhi, Jan 16 (UNI) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has described India as a ‘’key growth engine for the world’’ and said the third-quarter growth (in India) has come out stronger than expected.
Julie Kozack, Director, Communications Department, of the IMF, said at a press conference that IMF had estimated India’s growth for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 at 6.6 per cent based on strong consumption growth. However, the third quarter growth in India came out much stronger.
She was asked how did the IMF see India’s growth in 2025. (The transcript of the press conference was put on the IMF site on January 16.)
‘’What we have seen in India is that India is a key growth engine for the world. India’s growth in 2025, when we did our Article IV Staff Report, we had estimated growth for fiscal year 2025-2026 at 6.6 percent, which is based on strong consumption growth. What we have seen since then is that the third-quarter growth in India came out stronger than expected.’’
Ms Kozack said the IMF will be upgrading its forecast in the coming days when it will have a revised growth number for India at that time.
She however, maintained that the bottom line for IMF on India is that it has been a ‘’key driver of global growth’’.
‘’…and growth has been quite robust in India,’’ she added.
