Pregnant woman killed, 3 killed as speeding truck hits car in Himachal

Shimla, Jan 16 (UNI) A pregnant woman was killed and three members of her family were seriously injured in a road accident near Tunnel No. 4 in the Baloh area on Thursday evening, police said.
The mishap occurred when a speeding truck rammed into the car in which the family was travelling.
The collision severely damaged the vehicle, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Local residents rescued the injured from the wreckage and shifted them to the hospital with the help of ambulances. All the injured were referred for specialised treatment. The pregnant woman, who sustained critical injuries, later died during treatment at AIIMS, hospital authorities confirmed. The condition of the other three family members remains serious.
Police said the truck driver fled the scene after the accident. A case has been registered against the unidentified driver, and teams have been formed to trace the absconding accused. Investigations are underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, with overspeeding suspected as a key factor.
The incident comes against the backdrop of a series of accidents reported across Himachal Pradesh in recent weeks. Officials said the state has witnessed four fire mishaps and three major road accidents, many of them attributed to black ice on highways during the winter season.
These incidents have resulted in the deaths of at least 35 people, while several others have suffered fatal injuries in last 15 days. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during night travel and in areas prone to black ice, as winter conditions continue to pose serious risks on hill roads.
