Sophie Devine stars as GG edge past DC in WPL 2026

Navi Mumbai, (UNI) Sophie Devine’s explosive innings and all-round brilliance powered Gujarat Giants Women to a thrilling four-run victory over Delhi Capitals Women in the 4th match of the Women’s Premier League 2026 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy here today.

The New Zealand all-rounder smashed a scintillating 95 off 42 balls, including seven fours and eight sixes, while also picking up two crucial wickets to turn the game in Gujarat’s favour.

Captain Ashleigh Gardner supported with a quickfire 49 off 26 balls, and Beth Mooney contributed 19, helping the Giants post a challenging total of 209 for 10 in 20 overs.

Delhi fought valiantly in reply, with Lizelle Lee top-scoring with 86 off 54 balls, striking 12 fours and three sixes. Laura Wolvaardt made 77 off 38 deliveries, while Jemimah Rodrigues added 15. However, Delhi fell agonisingly short at 205 for 5.

The match featured a historic bowling performance by Nandani Sharma, who claimed a five-wicket haul, including a hat-trick in the final over. She dismissed Kashvee Gautam, Kanika Ahuja, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Renuka Singh in rapid succession, becoming only the second Indian to achieve a five-wicket haul in WPL history.

Timely breakthroughs from Devine, Kashvee Gautam, and Rajeshwari Gayakwad, proved decisive in denying Delhi the win.

Gujarat’s innings had included a flurry of boundaries and sixes, with Devine and Gardner dominating the middle overs and Kashvee joining the attack to maintain a high scoring rate.

Early wickets by Delhi bowlers briefly checked Gujarat’s momentum, but their batting depth ensured a competitive total above 200.

Delhi’s chase was powered by aggressive strokeplay from Lee and Wolvaardt, whose partnership brought the Capitals close, but Gujarat bowling and fielding, ensured a narrow victory.

Devine was named Player of the Match for her match-winning innings and crucial wickets, while Nandani received special acclaim for her historic five-wicket haul.

The Women’s Premier League 2026 continues tomorrow with the next fixture at the same venue, promising more high-octane contest between Riyal Challengers Bengaluru and UP Warriorz.
