New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) Amid China conducting military drills in the waters surrounding Taiwan, India today said it is closely following the developments and urged all concerned parties to exercise restraint and resolve issues through peaceful means.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, addressing the weekly media briefing, urged the parties to eschew unilateral action.
“India closely follows developments across the Indo-Pacific region. We have an abiding interest in peace and stability in the region in view of our significant trade, economic, people to people and maritime interests.
“We urge all concerned parties to exercise restraint, eschew unilateral action and resolve all issues through peaceful means without threat or use of force,” he said.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions after China conducted live-fire drills around Taiwan, including simulated blockade exercises.
Taiwan has vowed to defend its sovereignty. China’s military drills in waters surrounding Taiwan were held closer than ever to the self-ruled island’s coast and were the largest such exercises in more than three years.
US President Donald Trump has suggested he would be “very unhappy” if China attempted to seize Taiwan and that he doesn’t think Chinese President Xi Jinping would do so while he, Trump, is in office, in comments being interpreted as a warning for Beijing.
