Kannur, Jan 8 (UNI) The Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court (IV) on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to the seven RSS/BJP workers in connection with the murder of CPI(M) worker K Lathesh (28) of Thalai, in 2008.
Judge J Vimal also slapped a fine of Rs 1.40 lakh each to all the seven accused and ordered that the fine amount would be given to the kin of the victim’s family.
The court acquitted three others (accused numbers 9 to 12) including a former BJP Thalassery Municipal councillor Ajesh due to lack of evidence.While, one of the accused (number 8), K. Ajith, died during the trial of the case.
The court found guilty up to accused number seven– P Sumith, K K Prajeesh, B Nidhin, K Sanal, Smijesh, Sajeesh and V Jayesh, all hailing nearby Thalassery areas , under various sections including 302 of IPC (murder) in the morning, and awarded the quantum of punishment in the afternoon.
The trial began in the case on January 8, 2020 and the punishment was awarded after 17 years.
It was on December 31, 2008 evening, K Lathesh (28) of Thalai, a fisherman, and a CPI(M) local leader was hacked to death in an attack by a gang at Chakyathmukku near Thalassery beach. Lathesh died on the spot and three other CPI(M) workers Mohanlalu, Santhosh and Suresh suffered stab injuries in the attack.
