‘Indore drinking water unsafe across city’

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Assembly Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar on Wednesday carried out an on-the-spot water audit in several parts of Indore, collecting samples and conducting preliminary checks, which he claimed revealed that drinking water across most areas was highly contaminated and unfit for consumption. His visit comes in the wake of the Bhagirathpura tragedy, where 20 people have died after allegedly consuming polluted water, even as the state government and municipal corporation face accusations of evading responsibility.

Singhar said the crisis was not confined to Bhagirathpura but affected the entire city, forcing residents to consume sewage-mixed water. “What the administration should have done is now being done by the opposition on the streets,” he remarked.

In Medina Nagar, residents complained of heavy charges for new connections and alleged arrears, annual water bills, and threats of disconnection, despite receiving dirty water. In Khajrana, Narmada water was found to be foul-smelling and polluted, which Singhar termed a disgrace for a city branded as India’s cleanest. Similar conditions were reported in Bhuri Tekri, Indore Assembly constituency–2, Barfani Dham and Kanadia, where pipelines were found running close to drains, highlighting alleged civic negligence.

Raising sharp questions, Singhar asked whether the government would act only after deaths mount further and warned that Congress would launch a mass movement if immediate corrective steps and accountability were not ensured.
