Cholera bacteria found in water, Cong targets MP Govt

Bhopal: The Congress has mounted a sharp attack on the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government over the deaths of 20 people and serious illness of more than 1,000 residents in Indore after allegedly consuming contaminated drinking water. Addressing a press conference, Pradesh Congress Committee media department chairman Dr Mukesh Nayak described the incident as “deeply shocking” and accused the state government of insensitivity and a complete failure to fix accountability.

He said PCC president Jeetu Patwari and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar recently met affected families, who raised serious questions about the government’s response. Nayak pointed out that despite the scale of the tragedy, compensation of Rs 2 lakh has so far been given to only four families.

The Congress alleged that no concrete action has been taken against those responsible, even though the Chief Minister himself is the minister-in-charge of Indore. It also criticised cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya for allegedly abusing journalists, terming it an affront to democratic values.

Raising further concern, the party claimed that cholera bacteria had been detected in the water and questioned whether the matter had been reported to the World Health Organization. The Congress announced a state-level “Nyay Yatra” in Indore on January 11 to demand justice for the victims.
