Rajnath Singh visits Bangladesh High Commission, signs condolence book for late Khaleda Zia

New Delhi, Jan 1 (UNI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday visited the Bangladesh High Commission to express his condolences on the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

In a post on X, Singh while sharing his pictures of the visit wrote, “Went to the High Commission of Bangladesh in New Delhi. Signed the Condolence Book expressing our profound sorrow at the passing of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. Our thoughts are with her family and the people of Bangladesh.”

In another post, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah also spoke about the visit. “Honoured to welcome HE @rajnathsingh, Hon Defense Minister at @bdhc_delhi as he conveyed condolences of #India and paid homage to former Prime Minister @bdbnp78 Chairperson (late) #BegumKhaledaZia, in Delhi,” the post read.

A three-day mourning was declared by Bangladesh’s chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus following the death of former and country’s first female prime minister Khaleda Zia on Tuesday following years of ill health and imprisonment.

Earlier, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar represented India at Zia’s funeral and also met her son and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman. A letter of condolence from Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also handed over to Rahman.
