- Indore Water Tragedy
By Special Correspondent
Indore: Madhya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Reena Baurasi Setia on Wednesday visited Bhagirathpura, where the supply of contaminated water has led to a major health crisis, leaving over 200 residents ill and claiming eight lives. She went door to door to meet bereaved families, expressed condolences, and interacted with the injured, describing the situation as “extremely grim”.
Setia demanded compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of each deceased victim, holding the local administration and elected representatives responsible for the tragedy. Residents informed her that repeated complaints about foul and poisonous water had been made to local councillor Kamal Waghela, but no corrective action was taken. They further alleged that they were later intimidated for raising their voices.
Following these accounts, Setia, along with women Congress workers, visited the councillor’s residence and symbolically presented bangles in protest after being told he was unavailable.
Addressing the media, Setia accused the state government of making hollow claims about free medical treatment. “The reality is that patients are being asked to pay before receiving treatment,” she said, adding that residents had shown her multiple hospital payment receipts.
She also raised serious concerns over delays in post-mortems, citing a case where a victim’s body was not examined even after 24 hours. Setia demanded strict action against Additional Commissioner Rohit Sisodia and Narmada Project engineer Sanjeev Shrivastava, alleging an attempt to shield senior officials by targeting junior staff.
