India steps up AI push with Rs 10,300 cr investment, 38,000 GPUs deployed: Govt.

New Delhi, Dec 30 (UNI): India is stepping up its Artificial Intelligence (AI) ambitions with an investment of over Rs 10,300 crore under the IndiaAI Mission, significantly expanding its computing capacity to 38,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) over five years.

The move aims to make AI affordable, accessible, and inclusive, while positioning the country as a global leader in emerging technologies, the government said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to official data, India’s tech and AI ecosystem currently employs more than six million people, with the technology sector projected to cross USD 280 billion in revenue this year. Estimates suggest that AI alone could add nearly USD 1.7 trillion to India’s economy by 2035.

Launched in March 2024, the IndiaAI Mission focuses on building world-class digital infrastructure, supporting startups, and developing indigenous AI models.

A key highlight is the availability of high-end GPUs at a subsidised rate of Rs 65 per hour, enabling startups, researchers, and academic institutions to access advanced computing power.

India has also emerged as the world’s third most AI-competitive nation, according to Stanford University’s 2025 Global AI Vibrancy ranking, reflecting strong growth in talent, research, startups, and policy frameworks.

The country hosts over 1,800 Global Capability Centres, including more than 500 focused on AI, and nearly 89 per cent of new startups launched last year used AI in their products or services.

The government’s strategy includes seven pillars under the IndiaAI Mission, covering compute infrastructure, application development, datasets, foundation models, future skills, startup financing, and safe and trusted AI.

Initiatives such as AIKosh, a national dataset platform, and BharatGen, a multilingual foundational AI model, are designed to support India-specific use cases across healthcare, agriculture, education, governance, and climate services.

The government statement said the emphasis remains on responsible and inclusive AI adoption, ensuring that technological progress benefits citizens across regions and sectors.

With major global events like the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026, India is expected to further showcase its capabilities and strengthen international collaboration in artificial intelligence.
