New Delhi, Dec 25 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) delay in approaching the Supreme Court against the bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case, contrasting it with the swift action of central agencies in other matters.
AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj, during a media interaction, highlighted that while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) rushed to the High Court even before a written bail order was issued in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s recent case, the CBI had not shown similar urgency regarding Sengar’s bail.
Bharadwaj noted that in Kejriwal’s case, the ED sought an oral stay on the bail immediately after it was granted. He questioned whether the CBI, under the same central government, could have taken similar prompt action to challenge Sengar’s bail.
The AAP leader further stated that the open support for Sengar by some BJP MPs and ministers from Uttar Pradesh, following his conviction by a court, had sparked public anger. He suggested this indicated the government’s priorities were skewed toward securing the former MLA’s release.
Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 for the rape of a minor in Unnao. He was recently granted bail by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.
The CBI, which investigated the Unnao case, has not yet filed an appeal against the bail order in the Supreme Court.
