New Delhi, Dec 25 (UNI) Akasa Air on Thursday commenced commercial operations from the newly operational Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), which constitutes an important achievement for both the airline and India’s expanding aviation infrastructure.
The airline’s inaugural flight took off from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at 5.25 am on December 25 and landed at NMIA at 8.10 am, followed by the first departure from Navi Mumbai to Delhi at 8.50 am.
The launch positions Akasa Air among the first carriers to operate from NMIA, which is expected to play a crucial role in easing congestion at Mumbai’s primary airport and supporting long-term regional growth.
Initially, the airline will connect Navi Mumbai with Goa, Delhi, Kochi, and Ahmedabad, enhancing access to key business, leisure, and visiting-friends-and-relatives (VFR) destinations.
“Flights to Goa and Delhi began on December 25, services to Kochi will start on December 26, and Ahmedabad flights will commence from December 31,” a release stated.
A ceremonial event was held at NMIA to flag off the maiden flight, attended by Akasa Air Founder and CEO Vinay Dube and senior representatives from Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. A special boarding pass was presented to the first passenger on the inaugural service.
Speaking at the event, Dube said airports are long-term investments that underpin economic and social mobility. He said NMIA is a “generational expansion of aviation capacity” for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, offering modern infrastructure and an improved customer experience.
With operations now split between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and NMIA, Akasa Air aims to strengthen Mumbai’s role as a key hub in its growing network.
The airline plans to progressively ramp up operations from NMIA, scaling up to around 300 domestic and 50 international weekly departures in the coming years.
It also intends to expand to 10 parking bases by the end of FY2027, alongside a focused international push into Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian markets.
Akasa Air, which currently serves 26 domestic and six international destinations, has flown over 2.3 million passengers since launching operations in August 2022. With a fleet of 31 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and a firm order for 226 planes, the airline continues to pursue rapid but sustained growth, supported by fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft.
