Mumbai, Dec. 25 (UNI) Commercial flight operations commenced at Navi Mumbai International Airport on Thursday.
An IndiGo flight from Bengaluru, flight number 6E 460, landed at the airport at 7:31 a.m. amid a traditional water cannon salute.
To mark the arrival of the first commercial flight and the festive occasion of Christmas, all passengers were given a grand welcome at the airport along with special gifts.
This was followed by Akasa Air flight QP 1831 from Delhi, which landed at 7:40 a.m.
The new airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8.
In the initial phase, flight operations will be limited to the hours between 8 am. and 8 pm, with a maximum of 24 scheduled departures per day.
On the first day, IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air will operate domestic flights, connecting Navi Mumbai with nine cities across the country. On this day, 17 flights will depart from the airport and 15 will arrive.
From February 2026, operations at the airport, developed by the Adani Group, will be expanded in a phased manner to allow round-the-clock service.
The development of Navi Mumbai Airport is planned in five phases. Terminal 1 has been completed in the first two phases and has an annual capacity of 20 million passengers. In the next three phases, Terminals 2, 3 and 4 will be developed. Once fully completed, the airport will be capable of handling 90 million passengers annually.
